No Better Feeling

When I was 12 I was finally allowed to ride a palomino on the trails through the woods across the road from our farm and down to the Oshawa Creek to go for a swim. There was a hill we had to descend to get to the creek and we had to literally lay backward on the horse to prevent the horse from pitching forward due to the slope. Once we were at the creek we led the horses into the water and held on as they swam in the water. I can honestly say there is no greater feeling than being on a horse as it kicks through the water. That was my favourite summer.

Recently I was asked if I wanted to photograph horses and their owners doing exactly this in Lake Scugog, Caesarea. I could hardly contain myself from jumping up and down. The day was hot and the horses really needed the cool down. While not actually riding on their back this time it really was the next best thing to be able to photograph these magnificent creatures. Thank you to Sweetwater Stables for the invite.

Dog Days of Scugog 2019

We had quite a few visitors in our pop up studio during this years’ Dog Days of Scugog festival held at the Scugog Shores Museum in Port Perry. The dogs braved the heat over two days to have fun in the shows, visiting vendor booths, and playing in the various obstacle courses. Here are some images from our new clients.

Sweetwater Stables

This is me getting a cuddle from Brandi.

We spent a couple hours on a Sunday afternoon visiting Sweetwater Stables in Blackstock.  The owner Helen told us of her love for horses and how she converted her farm from cows to a safe haven for her rescued horses. Sweetwater Stables has an incredibly beautiful barn on 300 acres of property and has been in Helen’s family for over 45 years. Helen offers boarding and trail riding. You can see more about her stables here: https://sweetwaterstable.com/

My childhood included horses on our farm and it was truly a pleasure to be around them again. From the minute I took my first inhalation of farm air a feeling of warmth and serenity came over me.

We created portraits of horses and ponies for Helen and some of her boarders and are looking forward to our next visit in July.

We Had a Blast at Canadian Pet Expo-Mississauga

What’s the best way to spend a rainy spring day? We believe it was visiting Canadian Pet Expo this past Saturday. We spent the entire day visiting all the vendors, breeders, exhibitors, competitors and tricksters. What an incredible day! There were people with their dogs everywhere and yet we didn’t see or hear a single dog fight. The cat judging was informative and exciting to see so many different breeds in one location. Ultimutts put on incredible shows all day long. Their dogs performed fantastic tricks. The highlights of the day were meeting Instagram stars Suki The Adventure Cat, Tonic aka Church from Pet Sematary, Oliver, Dozer Merlin Ragdoll, and Tessa the Firedog. Other highlights were holding a Boa Constrictor and a hedgehog, two creatures we’ve never held before. We purchased some new props for our studio from @PawPawDear and @MissTakensBoutique that we can’t wait to use with your pets. If you get the chance check out Niagara Pet Expo June 15 & 16. It will be worth the drive.

Is Your Cat a Superhero? -Contest

IMG_7953.jpg

Is your cat a super hero? I once had a white cat named Casey. He saved my family from a potential fire in the middle of the night when our hair dryer fell off the counter, turned on and was pointed right at our plastic shower curtain. He jumped on my sleeping mother and meowed at her until she woke up. Then meowed persistently as he led her to the washroom so she could turn it off.

Tell us your true superhero cat story on our Facebook page. We'll pick the best one and award your family an in studio portrait session with your cat and a free 8x10 print.
